Slavery free chocolate: making ethical choices

In the lead-up to Easter, John XXIII College promoted the slavery free chocolate campaign, encouraging families to shop ethically and make informed choices. As Easter approached – the busiest season for chocolate – the College community reflected on the reality that many cocoa products were linked to child labour and unfair working conditions, where children were denied education and safe childhoods.

Living our values through action

By choosing slavery free, ethical chocolate, our community put into practice the College’s call to seek justice. This campaign reminded us that justice means caring about how our everyday choices affect others, standing in solidarity with children across the world, and choosing fairness over exploitation. Ethical choices also reflect care for creation, as many responsible producers prioritise sustainable farming practices.

How the College community participated

  • Families and students were encouraged to look for Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance logos on chocolate products, supporting brands committed to ending child labour.
  • Information about the chocolate scorecard was shared, helping everyone make more ethical choices.
  • The campaign message was spread through newsletters, posters and conversations, inviting all to join in making a positive impact.

A shared commitment to justice and care

This initiative reflected the College’s mission to form people of conscience, compassion and commitment – people for others – who act with integrity and strive for a more just world. By supporting slavery-free chocolate, our community demonstrated that small, thoughtful actions can help build a fairer, more sustainable future for all.
