We model responsible stewardship, embracing practices that care for our community and the natural environment.
Our sustainability journey is a living commitment – one shaped and deepened by the efforts of students, staff, and families working together. By building a culture of stewardship that reflects the values of Laudato Si' and our Ignatian tradition, we strive to leave a positive legacy for generations to come.
Sustainability is explored across learning areas and year levels, helping students make connections between global issues and local action. Classroom learning is complemented by hands-on experiences – investigations, outdoor learning, and student-led projects that address real needs within our College and the wider community.
Through this approach, students come to see themselves as capable of making a difference – whether by reducing waste, conserving resources, supporting those affected by environmental change, or advocating for sustainable policies.
John XXIII College considers sustainability as an opportunity for environmental stewardship, educational innovation, and community impact. From pioneering methane extraction from our former landfill playing fields in the 1990s to today's renewable energy projects, our campus demonstrates a practical, long-term commitment to reducing environmental impact while preparing the next generation for the challenges ahead.
As a waterwise school, we have established a water exchange with Perth High Performance Centre (formerly HBF Stadium), ensuring responsible water use and supporting sustainable practices in our local community. Our geothermal system – drilled 750 metres deep since 2004 – accesses 43-degree Celsius water to heat stadium pools before recirculating it for College gardens and ovals.
In partnership with Greenbatch, we collect single-use plastic bottles on campus and recycle them into filament for 3D printing – reducing waste while enhancing student learning in technology and design.
Our Sustainability Club brings together students and staff who share a passion for positive impact. Through hands-on activities including planting native flora, running workshops, Containers for Change, and leading community events, the Club fosters environmental awareness and a sense of collective responsibility.
