Coming Together For Our Common Home

The Sustainability Club at John XXIII College continues to be a vibrant part of our community. With a mission to nurture respect for the environment, champion hands-on learning, and build lifelong stewardship, the Club –open to all students–is guided by our Sustainability Coordinator and supported by committed staff and volunteers.

Recently, our College community came together for the Community Garden Care and Maintenance Day – a wonderful celebration of teamwork, environmental care, and shared purpose.

Parents, students, alumni, and staff braved the hot, humid weather, working side by side to rejuvenate our gardens and support the native Carnaby’s Black‑Cockatoos.

Armed with shovels, gloves, and plenty of enthusiasm, volunteers weeded, mulched, and planted, ensuring our gardens remain a thriving habitat for local wildlife. The sight of so many helping hands – young and old – was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together.

Led by dedicated students, the Sustainability Club has driven a number of impactful initiatives throughout the year. Members have planted more than 120 banksias, creating essential food sources for the endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoos. The results are already evident, with these iconic birds returning to feed on the trees nurtured by our community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their time and energy. Your efforts have refreshed our gardens and strengthened our sense of community. Together, we continue to live out the College’s values of service, justice, and care for our common home.
