We are committed to nurturing the potential of every student through a holistic, inclusive approach where every student has equitable access to genuine opportunities for academic growth.
In the Ignatian tradition, magis means ‘the more’ – a call to go beyond what is expected and strive for what is possible. Our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program inspires students to be curious, think critically, deepen their learning, and reach for their personal best across all aspects of College life.
Gifted and Talented students are challenged to pursue the magis in all areas of study, with extension activities available in and out of the Primary and Secondary classrooms.
Students requiring academic extension benefit from in-class extension activities with higher-order thinking and problem-solving tasks, independent research and inquiry projects. Gifted and Talented students in Years 4, 5 and 6 are provided with enrichment programs, competitions in mathematics, science, writing and the arts, problem-solving and innovation workshops, special interest clubs and creative projects.
The Magis program offers broad opportunities for academic challenge, enrichment, and leadership development. Students may choose a Magis unit of study as an elective course for its academic rigour, and to deepen their understanding of philosophy, critical and ethical thinking and particular subjects of interest. The Magis co-curricular program provides students with a wide range of workshops, clubs, competitions, enrichment activities and leadership opportunities. Working in collaboration with others, students strengthen their love of learning, creative and critical thinking, resilience and perseverance in their pursuit for academic excellence and personal challenge.
The Primary Literacy and Numeracy Program provides targeted support for students who need additional help. Small-group intervention programs focus on targeted instruction in phonics, spelling, reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
The Learning Enrichment Team supports Secondary students with specific learning needs. Literacy and numeracy support is provided to students on an individual basis, in small groups and in mainstream classes. Additional support in the areas of executive functioning, organisation and time management is provided by experienced educators and Education Assistants. The Learning Enrichment Team works in close partnership with parents, College staff and external networks to ensure that students are well cared for in support of their learning.
Mary Ward Primary and Secondary programs welcome students with physical and intellectual disabilities, providing them with individualised learning programs and opportunities to engage in mainstream learning. Supported by dedicated teams of Specialist Teachers and Education Assistants in safe and nurturing environments, students develop academic, social and life skills. This inclusive approach also provides students with opportunities to engage with their broader peers through College and community events.
