Into the wild: Year 9 takes on Collie

Some lessons can only be learned outside four walls. Last week, our Year 9 students travelled to the bush at Collie for two days of challenge, teamwork and discovery.

The camp is part of our outdoor education program, which runs across Years 8 to 10 as a regular feature of College life. At Collie, students traded the familiar for the demanding, tackling mountain biking, hiking, fishing, team challenges and camp craft. These are practical skills that sharpen when you are out in nature and depending on each other.

Outdoor education at John XXIII College is deliberately designed to stretch students physically and mentally. Whether on a hiking trail, in a canoe, or halfway down an abseil rope, the focus is not simply on the activity itself; it is on what students discover about collaboration, leadership, problem-solving and perseverance when the pressure is real.

Our Year 9s rose to every challenge, showed maturity and supported one another throughout their time in the bush. They return with new skills and deepened friendships. Thank you to the staff who made this experience possible.
