Magis - Gifted and Talented

Curiosity, challenge and connection at Magis Camp

A shared passion for curiosity and discovery brought together a select group of Years 7 to 9 Magis students for the annual Magis Camp, an enriching experience designed especially for gifted and talented learners.

A much-anticipated highlight of the Magis calendar, the camp gives students the opportunity to extend their thinking, embrace new challenges and build friendships with like-minded peers across different year groups.

The adventure began at WA Museum Boola Bardip, where students formed vertical teams and quickly put their collaboration and creativity to work. In the Enterprising Entrepreneurs workshop, they explored how innovators have transformed their passions into successful businesses before developing entrepreneurial ideas of their own.

Their thinking was taken even further in Lunar Design and Discovery. After investigating objects from space in the Museum’s Origins and Innovations galleries, students turned their attention to the future, programming robotic lunar rovers to search for resources and exploring the role technology may play in future space exploration.

Back at the College, the lunar theme continued with an interactive workshop led by Ms Redfern, Library and Learning Services Educator. Students explored the phases of the Moon before putting their knowledge to the test through a hands-on Oreo challenge, bringing together learning, creativity and plenty of fun.

The group then travelled to Point Walter Recreation and Conference Centre, where 2026 Magis Captain Catherine shared her own Magis journey. Catherine reflected on the friendships, skills and opportunities the program has given her, including the remarkable experience of representing the College at Yale University in the United States. She encouraged younger students to embrace opportunities, say ‘yes’ to new experiences and recognise the possibilities that can emerge from stepping outside their comfort zones.

While wet weather meant the planned astronomy session could not go ahead, there was no shortage of enthusiasm. The annual Magis Talent Show was again a camp favourite, showcasing everything from comedy and dance to music and performance. Congratulations to Connor and Henry, whose entertaining rendition of Piano Man, complete with harmonica and vocals, earned them top honours.

For some of the keenest campers, Saturday began with an early morning walk along the Swan River before everyone gathered for a much-loved Magis Camp tradition, the Big Quiz. Prepared by the Year 12 Magis students, the fiercely contested competition brought plenty of energy and friendly rivalry. Congratulations to this year’s winning team of Bonnie, Lucy, Henry, Daisy and Connor.

Beyond the workshops, challenges and activities, the heart of Magis Camp was the students themselves. Their enthusiasm, camaraderie and willingness to challenge themselves and support one another reflected the spirit of the Magis program. Across the camp, students stepped outside their comfort zones, formed new friendships and embraced opportunities to think, question and discover.

A heartfelt thank you to Ms Harding from the Science Department and Mr O’Hara from the Mathematics Department for their generosity, enthusiasm and support throughout the camp, helping make this year’s experience so rewarding and memorable.

We look forward to seeing where the curiosity sparked at Magis Camp takes our students next.
