Music Curricular
Music is a compulsory subject from Pre Primary to Year 7. At Years 8, 9 and 10, students can choose from a variety of options including Music. At Year 11 the ATAR Music Course (Units 1 and 2) is offered and in Year 12, WACE Music is offered (this will change to ATAR Music (Units 3 and 4) from 2016.
In Year 7, Music is specifically designed as an aural approach to learning Music.
In Year 8, Music is an elective subject. Students are able to choose music for both semesters if they wish. All students develop skills in rhythm, pitch and composition working with a range of media: percussion, instruments and technology.
In Year 9 students can elect to do Music. Music gives students the opportunity to perform, compose their own music, and develop skills that increase their understanding of the Music language.
In Year 10, students study a modified version of the ATAR Year 11 Music course. The focus of their study is the solo instrumental and vocal genre. Students develop their skills in Solo performance, Cultural and Historical Perspectives, Aural and Music theory and Composition. The second semester course focuses mostly on higher level Theory and Performance skills and is recommended for all students considering ATAR Music in Year 11.
In Year 11, students focus on individual performance, development of aural and composition skills, and observe and evaluate major contributions of other musicians in the context of the place in history, in particular, 17th - 19th centuries, within a specific music genre. Music students in Year 11 can avail themselves of regular recital opportunities that occur monthly within the College Music calendar. Students also perform in their Year 11 Music Recital.
In Year 12, students can study Year 12 Music ATAR. This subject is designed to provide students with a knowledge of Western Art Music from the 17th to the 21st Century. It requires a commitment to the challenges of performance at a high level, to exploring the fundamentals of composition and listening, and to the development of creativity and aural skills. Music students in Year 12 can avail themselves of regular recital opportunities that occur monthly within the College Music calendar. The students also perform in the Year Music 12 Recital, the St George's Cathedral Lunchtime Recital series and in certain years have the opportunity to perform a Concerto with Orchestra.
