The Educational Role of the Parents' Association
Through 'INSPIRE': Parent presentations & forums
The Parents' Association funds a program of speakers and educators who discuss a range of relevant social issues affecting young people and their families today.
Topics so far have addressed the following issues:
Additional topics are investigated by the Inspire sub-committee throughout the year.
On occasions, forums of focus groups are organised to follow these presentations. Parents and students have an opportunity to share their concerns, knowledge and experience with the aim of achieving the most positive and healthy outcomes for the young people in our College community - both while they are at school and when they graduate as young adults.
An example of this is the presentation given by Paul Dillon, of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia. Paul has partnered the College in educating our senior students in Years 10-12 on the effects of drugs and alcohol and harm-minimisation. He also presents to parents and staff to support them in their roles, providing crucial information and guidance.
Following the inaugural Parent Forum (2011), a subcommittee of John XXIII staff and parents devised pamphlets on 'Youth & Alcohol' and 'Tips for Parents & Teenage Parties'. The pamphlets were developed in consultation with the relevant community agencies.
