Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care at John XXIII College is informed by and given its spirit by the school's place as part of the Evangelical Ministry of the Church. John XXIII College is in essence the face of Christ for the entire community and its pastoral role needs to infuse every aspect of its operation and relationship. Pastoral Care has the primary aim of enhancing the dignity of every person within the faith community. Pastoral practice at the College is concerned with the formation of the whole person by attempting to maximise the intellectual, physical, emotional, social and spiritual development, enabling every person to become inner-directed and contributing members of God's creation.

Gospel values and Ignatian spirituality underpin the College Code of Behaviour, "Seek Justice". The rights and responsibilities outlined in the code apply to all in the College Community in the work of creating people of competence, conscience and compassion who are committed to seeking justice and the service of others.

During the Primary Years we recognise that every child has the right to learn and play safely, to be respected and respect others. Positive incentives and consequences are managed by primary staff to nurture individual growth. This approach is used to foster self discipline within each child and develop responsible decision making.

The Secondary Pastoral Care structures are two-fold. Each student belongs to a Year Group and a House. The two identities combine to form a Home Room which is created from the House divided into horizontal groups (eg Year 8 Loreto, or Year 12 Campion). The students have the support and mentoring of a Home Room teacher, an Assistant Deputy Principal (responsible for all Year level issues) and a House Coordinator (primarily responsible for engagement with College life).

Pastoral Care is delivered through relationships with others, and through the daily program of activities promoted or supported by Year level and House Coordinators i.e. House Days, Camps, Reflection Days, Assemblies, Lunches, House Sport, Music or Drama.

All staff contribute to the work of pastoral care through daily interaction with students, parents and colleagues.

Each Year level comprises an Assistant Deputy Principal and six Home Room teachers. The Homeroom teacher is the first point of reference for students and parents.
