Year 9 Introduction to Computer Programming

Overview

This unit will introduce students to the fundamental principles of computer programming. Rather than simply using application software for specific tasks, students will be able to write simple programs as solutions to typical problems.

Topics

  • The basic concepts of variables, program flow, input and output.
  • The command-line interface and simple DOS commands.
  • Batch programming basics as an introduction to automated execution.
  • Programming macros in several standard applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Using QBasic as a simple introduction to the main concepts of iteration, repetition and branching.
  • Moving on to Visual basic as a graphical programming environment.

Assessments

There will be a number of assessable tasks throughout the unit. They will vary in size and the marks available for each will also vary according to their complexity and time demands: 80% | Test at the end of the unit: 20%

Reporting

A brief interim report on class work and behaviour will be issued towards the end of Term One. The achievement for the unit will be reported as a College A - E grade. In addition, the student's approach to class work and behaviour will be reported via the usual key performance indicators.

Student Expectations - Homework

Most of the work undertaken will be completed in the College computer laboratories. In addition, students will be expected to obtain the programming language software and complete some practising at home.
