Around the Primary

Dear Parents

We have had a really great start to the term and already we have much to celebrate!

Today the students from Years 3-6 celebrated Mass with Fr Joseph Sobb SJ from Holy Rosary, Nedlands. Special thanks to Miss Nish and all of the students from Year 4B for preparing the beautiful liturgy, in recognition of the Feast of All Saints on Saturday. We hope many parents will be able to come along to our Masses and Assemblies during the term. Please check our updated Term 4 calendar for details.

Our Junior Primary Athletics Carnival was a huge success today. We were greeted with perfect weather and a tremendous turnout of parents and grandparents to cheer the children along. The students have enjoyed learning the team games, as well as completing time trials in preparation for their running events.

The children themselves should be very proud of their efforts. While there were obviously some standout performances, it was clear that every student was trying their very best. There were also many acts of great sportsmanship, with students shaking each other's hands after events and patting each other on the back.

Congratulations and thank you to Mr Alderman for coordinating another successful sporting event. Our Carnivals are such a tremendous success due to a combination of enthusiastic staff, parent support and children who genuinely try their best. We are lucky enough at the College to have all three!

Look at our young students in action!

They all had a wonderful time!

They learnt to persist, to keep trying and to do their personal best!

Meeting new and different people is a fact of life and it is our role as parents and teachers to support children through change rather than protect them from it. All children will meet their teacher for 2015 on Monday 1st December. Please note, parental requests can only be met in exceptional circumstances and letters requesting a particular teacher does not constitute an exceptional circumstance. Individual replies to requests and early notification of class lists will not be provided. I ask all parents to trust that the class your child is going into next year is one in which they will thrive.

The hectic pace of Term 4 has set in and it has come to my attention that some children are arriving late for school or leaving early. It is very important that all children attend school from 8.45 am until 3.15 pm each day. Whilst we understand that parents may need to collect their children early on the odd occasion or for medical appointments, it is very important that children be at school for the full day. Teachers commence face-to-face teaching at 8.50 am and children arriving late or being picked up early, compromises the teaching and learning program for the whole class as class time is interrupted.

It is also disappointing to note that many students missed school or were picked up early for recent 'social' camps as this is also extremely disruptive to the rest of the class. It is important that all parents consider this when planning for future events and we look forward to all families co-operating with us on this issue.

At the College we provide supervised care from 8.15 am to 3.35 pm each day. Junior Primary students can be collected from the 'loop carpark' in the front of the College and Middle/Upper Primary students can be collected from the main carpark off John XXIII Avenue. However, it seems that some children are waiting for parents to pick them up in other areas close to the College where there is no adult supervision. The care and safety of all students is our priority and we ask that all parents pick-up their children from the designated areas. If students are not collected by 3.35 pm they will be required wait in the Main Administration building off Mooro Drive.

Just a reminder, to ensure a quick and efficient flow of traffic through the 'loop', families with Junior Primary children are requested to display their 'drive thru surname cards' on their sun-visors or on the dashboard of their vehicle. If you need a new or extra surname card for a second vehicle, please email Cath Philpot on philpot.catherine@johnxxiii.edu.au

As today is World Teacher's Day, I wish to congratulate and thank all the staff for contributing so generously in their role as educators. We have such a creative, talented and hard working group of staff at the College who quietly and efficiently to do their work in so many ways seen and unseen!

To all the wonderful staff, THANK YOU!

Kind regards,

Antoinette De Pinto
Head of Primary

National History Challenge
Congratulations to Oliver Mitteregger (5B) and Ben Newton (5G), who gained Runner Up in their category at the 2014 WA National History Challenge recently. Their short movie was filmed at several sites and showed the history and consequences of European Settlement on Indigenous People in Western Australia. Congratulations Oliver and Ben!

Year 4 Parent iPad Meeting
In preparation for next year and as part of our ongoing commitment to Information Technology, we invite all Year 4 parents to join us for an information session on iPads and ICT in education. The iPad has proven to be a valuable addition to learning tools available in the Primary School. We also recognise the importance in educating students on digital citizenship at home and at school. We hope all Year 4 parents will be able to attend this important session on Wednesday 12th November at 9am or 2pm. More information will follow.

Presentation Night
This year our Presentation Night will take place in the St Louis Centre on Wednesday 3rd December at 7pm. As this is an important community event for our College all students from Years 5 and 6 are expected to attend. Our Year 5 students will also be providing some special musical entertainment. Please save the date!
