Sustainability

21 May 2014: Pope Francis' Audience

"Creation is not a property, which we can rule over at will; or, even less, is the property of only a few: Creation is a gift, it is a wonderful gift that God has given us, so that we care for it and we use it for the benefit of all, always with great respect and gratitude."

This year we planted Kipfler, Ruby Lou and Royal Blue potato varieties.

During Term 4 the Jesuit Science and Environment garden is transitioning from winter to summer crops. Last week, the Sustainability Club students, who had spent two terms caring for the potato patches, harvested the potatoes. It was great to see the excitement in everyone as they dug their hands in the soil and found little potato gems.

It is a wonderful experience to witness students receiving these gifts of creation and showing great respect and gratitude for the environment, and one that makes John XXIII College such a special place.

Green tip: Have you tried washing your laundry in cold water in your washing machine? Cold water when used with a washing powder or liquid suitable for cold water performs just as well as hot water while using half the energy.
