Sustainability
The World Environment Day theme this year is "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care." The well-being of humanity, the environment and the functioning of the economy ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet's natural resources. And yet, evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.
The Eco-Warriors Team of John XXIII College held lunchtime activities last week to celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June. This included pick up your rubbish day and Plant a Seed Day. The new mascot Sustainable Steve was introduced and the students had 'Sustainable Snaps' taken with him. This included turning off a leaky tap, using reusable containers for lunch or simply putting rubbish in the bin. On Plant a seed day the students learnt through a basic workshop how to plant a seed and took home an egg carton with the seed they planted themselves.
The next project for John XXIII College Eco-Warriors is to coordinate with Bike Rescue. Dismantle's flagship program 'The Bike Rescue Project' gets 10 young people together for 10 weeks. They're all kids who aren't engaging with any other education or employment.
They spend the first five weeks each taking apart a rusty old bike, showing it some TLC, putting it back together and ultimately donating the new and improved product to charity. Then they do the whole thing again, but this time they get to keep the bike themselves. This is also very sustainable for the environment through the recycling of bikes
John XXIII College kids will hopefully donate their own bikes to the Bike Rescue Project and become more involved outside of school communities.
