Around the Primary

Dear Parents,

The term ahead is full of great opportunities to learn and grow. Next week we begin Founders’ time and this gives our community time to reflect on and learn more about the stories of our three patrons – St John XXIII, St Ignatius Loyola and Mary Ward. Next Monday we will come together at a whole school Primary Assembly to celebrate the Feast of St Ignatius. Throughout the week the children will be learning about St Ignatius and the formation of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)

The children from Year 3-6 thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday. Well done to all the competitors! Our appreciation is extended to Mr Alderman for coordinating this great sporting event, Glenn Mitchell for sharing his wonderful compering skills and to all the hard-working staff and parent volunteers.

2016 Inter-house Cross Country Report

On what could only be described as a magnificent day for cross country running, the Years 3 to 6 Primary students competed in their Carnival on Tuesday afternoon. The students had trained extremely hard over the previous months and they all performed tremendously well on the day. The sportsmanship displayed amongst our runners was very pleasing. The first eight runners from each grade in the boys and girls’ events have been chosen to represent the College at the Inter-school Carnival on Thursday 4 August.

I would like to sincerely thank all the people who made the Carnival such a success. These include Doug Watson and the Maintenance crew, Jeff Jansen and Daniel Paparo (Sound), the wonderful parent officials, our newly appointed Year 6 House Captains, Dustin Fromm (for assistance with set-up after school), Glenn Mitchell (for his brilliant announcing) and to all the Years 3 to 6 John XXIII College classroom teachers for their recording and supervision. Literacy Planet

Students from Year 1-6 have been registered in a word building competition called ‘Literacy Planet’ Word Mania 2016. The Word Mania game is an exciting way to engage students in developing their literacy skills. Students are given a board of 15 randomly generated letter tiles and the aim of the game is to see how many words they can build in three minutes. They will be having fun while at the same time improving their literacy skills. Students are able to play the game as many times as they like to see their bank of points grow!

This week all student’s from Years 1-6 received a user name and password to access Literacy Planet WORD MANIA. It is accessible on either a desk top or mobile device. If using a desktop simple enter the site and using log on details log on as a student. If using a mobile device download a free app called Word Mania 2016 and again using log on details log on as a student. Students will be using Word Mania at school at various times throughout next week and are encouraged to jump on and have a few spelling rounds at home too.
