The General Public and John XXIII College Parents are Invited to Attend

The talk includes the following:

  • The God of verbs (rather than nouns or adjectives)
  • Suffering: Divine punishment, Divine test, Divine plan: Avoiding pain v Engaging with pain
  • Fr Tony De Mello SJ on prayer (Intercessory Prayer & God's will)
  • Dr Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and Prayer (Acceptance v Miracle)

We will use scriptural and other stories, poetry, reasoning and experience to explore the mystery of grace.

Fr Steve is currently the Parish Priest of East Fremantle; he is also in discussions with the School of Medicine, NDA, to work on the School's spirituality. He chairs the Fremantle Zone of Priests and is a member of the Council of Priests for the Archdiocese. He teachers various courses with the Maranatha Institute on the Spiriuality of Health, St Ignatius, Vatican 2, Pope Francis and St Marks' Gospel.

Born in Sydney and lived in Iran for 10 years he was educated by Christian and Marist Brothers in Brisbane. His tertiary education began in the Queensland University Law School; he left to join the Jesuits in 1975, with his primary school friend, Fr Frank Brennan SJ. After completing their studies, they were ordained together in Brisbane 1985.

Fr Steve worked in university chaplaincy in Perth and Brisbane with a couple of national jobs. He then worked among homeless alcoholic men in Melbourne for 3 years, after which he went to Nigeria for 17 years, returing to Australia in 2008. His main work in Nigeria was as the Chaplain to a Teaching Hospital and a College of Medicine. He held a number of ther national positions for the Jesuits and the Church.

Since returing to Australia, he has spent time at Sevenhill and North Sydney parish. He came back to Perth in 2010 when Archbishop Hickey wanted him to work at the Notre Dame University Medical School. He enjoys teaching and preaching, avoids sugar and loves a good conversation over a coffee or a glass of red wine.
