Around the Primary

Dear Parents

We have had such a busy week around the Primary School with our students participating in a range of learning experiences. We hope you enjoy reading about some of their activities and adventures.

Our Year 2 students enjoyed a bus trip to the University of Western Australia. The excursion was part of the "Scientist in Schools" program which the students have participated in throughout the term with Scientist, Siobhan Wills. Scientist Siobhan showed the students some weird and wonderful experiments in the laboratory at UWA. They were dazzled with lots of different smells, colours and a few explosions too! The students were able to make gooey slime and dress as a scientist too! This was a wonderful learning opportunity for our future scientists.

Special thanks to Ms Wills, Mrs Purcell, Ms Cooney and Miss Monastra for making Science come alive for our young students.

The whole Primary school gathered in the gym on Monday morning to meet Matthew Priddis (2014 Brownlow Medallist) and Matthew Allen from the Eagles. The players spoke to the students about good sportsmanship, endurance, and the importance of achieving your personal best. They also reminded the students about the importance of eating breakfast each day and healthy foods.

Our Eagles Cup Football Squad along with some other students who play Club Football were very fortunate to also participate in a training session with these talented players.

Thank you to Mr Alderman for organising this special visit.

The Year 5 and 6 Chess Tournament is now complete with two teams selected for the Interschool Chess Competition. It was great to see so many Year 5 and 6 Students take part in a series of exciting games. Well done to all those who participated and for displaying such great sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Congratulations to our Interschool Teams and we wish you every success at the Chess Competition on Monday.

We extend our thanks to Mrs Magee for co-ordinating this challenging competition.

The 3G students prepared a wonderful assembly item about special days and celebrations from around the world. The children proudly shared their learning in creative ways about Anzac Day, Chinese New Year, NAIDOC Week and 'Haru' - the Season of Spring in Japan.

A big thank you to Ms Allen, Miss Joyce and Sensei Rowson for all their hard work behind the scenes.

Shaun Tan Awards

Earlier in the term our Art Teacher, Mrs Jane Roche submitted students' artworks for the highly prestigious Shaun Tan Awards for Young Artists. This year we are delighted to have two selected artworks to be exhibited. Bryn Chapman (5G) will be exhibiting his owl drawing and Sylvia Czajko (3G) her elephant charcoal study.

Bryn is actually one of the finalists for his category and will get an opportunity to go along to the awards ceremony in late July at Subiaco Library, where he will get to meet Shaun Tan himself!

Their wonderful pieces will be display at Subiaco Library and family and friends are welcome to visit the exhibition from 18 July to 14 August.

Bryn and Sylvia should be very excited and proud of their wonderful achievement.

We have had a busy but fun week around the Primary.

Enjoy the weekend!
