Welcome back to a Sustainable New School Year… There was an immense amount of work completed over the summer holidays at John XXIII College. It is delightful to see all this work was carried out with a very noticeable sustainability focus in mind. Thank you to Jim Pearson and all our grounds and maintenance staff for all their hard work.

The Library courtyard looks beautiful, with our new benches which were clad in 900 lineal metres of re-milled Jarrah rescued from our old gymnasium roof.

Similarly, the Primary playground equip' got a new entry bridge also made from the recycled gymnasium timber. The kindergarten finally got its cubby house, which is manufactured from sustainably sourced timber from the forest floor of a privately held patch of forest in Bunbury.

Year 1 has a new breakout courtyard with flipped pavers taken out & re-used from the east side of the Gymnasium. The surrounding garden beds have been planted with water wise flowering plant selections over annuals.

The new Gymnasium was built with a number of sustainable features:

  • Only partial demolition to keep some walls
  • Re-used some roofing tiles, balance re-cycled
  • Steel supports re-manufactured
  • Intelligent Energy Saving Sunray LED lighting to main hall
  • Sufficient natural lighting
  • Verandas and automatic louvers to lower temperatures
  • Automatic sensor lights to all stores and toilets
  • Sustainable air-conditioning controls to staffroom and weights room

I would like to wish every success to our new sustainability captains for 2013 Sophie Monisse and Kieran Panizza who will no doubt work hard to inspire fellow students to become more sustainably aware in their daily lives at home and at school.

We have many exciting new Sustainability projects happening early this year, such as 'Seed2Tree' Scheme, 'WaterWise' Program, Clean Up Australia Day etc. more information to follow so watch this space…

If can contribute some sustainable ideas or suggestions for the College please feel free to email me

Let's work together to make a noticeable improvement in the area of sustainability at John XXIII College.
