Fremantle Dockers Cup Girls AFL Carnival

The Claremont Football Development region hosted the Fremantle Dockers Cup on Friday 30 October. Sixteen teams competed from seven schools, St Hilda's, MLC, Perth Modern, Newman, Churchlands and Shenton College. After a three year break, 47 girls from Years 8-10 admirably represented John XXIII College in two teams. The Year 8/9 team had some tough pool matches against the two grand finalists Churchlands (2) and Newman and were narrowly defeated by St Hilda's in the third match to unfortunately not go through to the finals.

The Year 10 competition was a round robin with the winner to be decided on points. The Year 10 team progressed through the first two matches by not conceding a point. Confidence was high, as they took on last year's winner, Newman in the third round who were also undefeated. Roisin O'Connor's opportunist goal in the dying seconds, ensured the match to be a draw. The final game against Shenton College came down to percentage, and a large one at that. Sam Cousins (Alumni) who organised the day, informed the team at half time that they would need to win by 10 goals to ensure victory. After only kicking two goals in the first half, the girls produced a story book ending by booting almost a goal a minute to secure the Freo Dockers Cup.

Congratulations must go to all the John XXIII College girls for demonstrating tremendous spirit, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and joy throughout the entire day. Many thanks to Ruth O'Donnell, Caroline Watson, Lyn Alexander and Darren Kowal for coaching and supporting the girls. Thank you also to Rod Downie, parents and grandparents who were able to come to the City Beach oval throughout the day and support the girls.
