Primary Philosothon

Yesterday afternoon I had a meeting with Art Gallery of Western Australia staff to begin planning our John XXlll College/Art Gallery of Western Australia 2013 Philosothon. We are using the model developed by the National Gallery of Victoria and adapting it to include work I have previously done based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences.

In Term 4 last year I took a small group of our Year 7 students to the Gallery and spent the day working through a program I developed for gifted extension. This was very successful and will form the basis of the structure for our Philosothon in 2013. In 2013 the Gallery will have an exciting visiting exhibition, Van Gogh to Richter, and the students will focus on works from this exhibition and also works in the Centenary Gallery.

While the NGV's Philosothon included students from Years 4 to 6, ours will include years 4 to 7. Given the Hale School Philosothon is for Years 8 to 11, we felt including Year 7 was important. I am very excited about the prospect of developing this program and hope our young philosophers find it similarly exciting and intellectually stimulating.

We are very fortunate that the Western Australian Art Gallery is generous enough to be able to include this event in their busy schedule.
