Hi JTC Alumni

I've just come back from the Vietnam Pilgrimage and spent most of the time with Sr Trish who manages the Loreto Vietnam Program. This year I travelled with 2 teachers and 15 students, a much larger group than last year when Rod Downie and I travelled with just 10 students. It was another life changing Pilgrimage. Two weeks is only a drop in the ocean but it does provide the opportunity of introducing the plight of some very disadvantaged children in our world to very privileged Year 11 sixteen year olds. The diseases and poverty are not only legacies of the Vietnam War but also just daily life of those living under a communist regime, some who are ill-educated and live in third world conditions.

Most of last year's Vietnam Pilgrimage group (Class 2012) are returning to Ho Chi Minh City independently of the College in January next year. It was also enlightening finding one of our Alumni visiting the Orphanage for severely disabled children from Class 2004. She travelled with 9 of her classmates in 2003 and now travels back to Vietnam to assist in the same orphanage every year. A fine example of educating people at John XXIII College with commitment, conscience, competence and seeking justice outside familiar grounds.

A Christmas Luncheon has been organised to raise funds to go directly to Sr Trish and the programs she has set up. These include the blind school for 400 students, a home for Prostitutes who are encouraged to keep their babies, kindergartens and schools in the country among other projects.
