2012 Cross Country
|
With winter just around the corner the interschool cross country season has finished for 2012 with John XXIII performing commendably at the SSWA and ACC carnivals. Unfortunately we couldn't replicate the magnificent results of 2011 but this was not due to a lack of effort at training or on the day of competition. The College finished 2nd Overall at the SSWA and 3rd at the ACC event.
Our students involved can be extremely proud of the way they represented their College and it has been a pleasure to be involved in coaching the team. Unfortunately we were robbed by injury of 4 John XXIII house cross country champions in the boys' category, which was always going to be hard to overcome.
For those not familiar with the team cross country running, scoring at the carnival is on the basis of placing and a runners place is their score i.e. place 23 = 23 points. The lower the place the better the score and the school with the lowest overall score wins. The scoring is also constructed such that for a school to qualify for an event they must have a minimum of three runners complete the course within the prescribed cut off time. To qualify for overall aggregate trophies schools must qualify for all events in an age group.

The John XXIII girls' team showed the boys what hard work and reliance can achieve with a magnificent performance at the ACC event. The girls were extremely unlucky to miss out on their shield, falling short by a mere 12 points and finishing 2nd overall. As has been said in previous years it is always hard to highlight individual performance in such a team orientated event. But I would like to congratulate Sian Munks who finished 1st in the U/13 girls and Jessica Byrd for finishing 2nd in the U/15 girls.
I hope the students involved today have enjoyed their running throughout the season. We look forward to the boys helping our girls with renewed hunger to challenge for the overall title in 2013! A final thank you to all the staff involved with training as without their support we would not be able to run such a comprehensive and challenging training program.
