Magis

PD for teachers

The two week non-teaching break was busy for Magis making the most of the opportunity to meet with people to develop projects. John XXlll College and the Catholic Education Office are planning a Gifted Education Network meeting at the College in November to launch the new Gifted Policy for Catholic schools and to discuss how might we implement the policy.

Magis Workshop and Philosothon

In the first week of the break I spent a day at the Art Gallery of Western Australia planning a Philosothon for our Magis Workshop to take place on 14 November. On Friday 12 October I met with the Gallery's Education Officer, Lisa Young, to explain how we will run the day and to discuss the artworks I have selected. We plan to film some of the student work on the day. I have developed a program that should elicit deep philosophical consideration from the students on the day. They will also have the benefit of seeing the wonderful exhibition, From Picasso to Warhol, and discuss some works from that collection.

John XXlll College Philosophy Essay Prize

In week two this term we will send a team to the Hale School Philosothon. On the night the John XXlll College Philosophy Essay Prize will be awarded. We had some wonderful entries this year and it has taken some time to decide an overall winner and runner-up.

Summer Design Studio UWA

Current year 11 students with an interest in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture are invited to take part in the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts' (ALVA) Summer Studio 2013. The studio is an opportunity for students entering into Year 12 in 2013 to, through intense tuition sessions with Faculty staff, develop new skills and "jump start" their academic careers with ALVA.

Architects create structures that are not just for habitation and shelter but can become buildings to inspire, structures to convey ideas, places for contemplation, pieces of sculpture, areas for learning and objects to amaze. This Summer Studio will aim to show how architecture can be used in such ways. The vehicle to explore these ideas will be the design of a small pavilion in the forecourt of the newly completed Perth Arena. The Arena was designed by Melbourne architecture firm ARM in collaboration with Perth architecture firm CCN. It is set to become an iconic and landmark building not just in Perth but also in Australia.

Students will have the opportunity to design a small structure that will serve as a place for resting and shelter as well as contemplation. The design will explore interaction with the architecture of the Perth Arena, the internal and external spaces, as well as aspects of scale and context. The structure and space will also need to function as a venue for occasional small performances.

The studio will consist of:

  • An introduction to computer modelling
  • A visit to the site
  • Talks by architects involved with the design of the Perth Arena
  • An introduction to design by architects in Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts at UWA
  • Model making and drawing
  • An exhibition of student work at the end of the studio.

Summer Studio 2013 will be held at the ALVA Faculty, Nedlands Campus, corner of Stirling Highway and Hampden Road, Perth, and will run between January 21 and 24 from 9am to 4pm daily. Students need no prior knowledge and no artistic skills. The studio costs $220 per student, which includes materials used. Students are able to enrol and pay the studio fee online via: www.alva.uwa.edu.au/courses/studio now - enrolment closes on December 16 and places are limited.

Cultural DeCoding at the University of Notre Dame

Year 11 students are reminded this is an exciting program initiated by John XXlll College and running for the second time at the University of Notre Dame 15 to 18 January 2013. This four-day experience will help unlock the ideas that define who we are. With a mixture of art, archaeology, history, philosophy, theology, theatre and politics, the experience will intellectually challenge and enrich minds to prepare for further study.
