Around the Primary

Dear Parents,

The last week has been busy with staff finalising the Semester One Reports and a number of events taking place to finish a wonderful term of learning.

Interschool Chess Competition

On Monday we hosted over forty teams of young chess players in a Chess Competition in the Exhibition Centre. Our Year 5 and 6 teams thoroughly enjoyed the competition and played very well.

Congratulations to our Year 6 team for achieving Third Place. Special thanks to Mrs Magee for co-ordinating this event and to Liam Love Cooper (Year 11) for his coaching assistance.

Science

As part of their Science program this term our Year One children have been learning all about minibeasts. On Tuesday they participated in a 'hands-on' incursion with entomologist, David from 'Spineless Wonders'. David brought along an amazing collection of minibeasts for the children to look at closely and they even got to hold some too!

Winter Sports

Yesterday we hosted the IPSHA Co-educational Winter Sports Carnival. Our ovals were filled with excited students from All Saints College, Carmel School, Quintilian School, Loreto Catholic Primary School, Newman College, Tranby College, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar, John Wollaston College and Frederick Irwin School. Our Year 5 and 6 students participated very well in the various Soccer, Hockey, Netball and Football games.

Congratulations to Mr Alderman for co-ordinating this sensational day of sport. Our sincere thanks to the Year 6 parents for all their hard work with the catering and to our Year 10 students for umpiring throughout the day.

Assembly

A big thank you to Mrs Fontaine and Year 5G for preparing and presenting today's assembly based on the theme of 'knowledge'. It was great to find out about the student's special interests, sports and favourite activities, such as, reading, building with lego, horse-riding, surfing and many others.

Everyone is welcome to come along to the Recital this Sunday to see our 'Outstanding Performers' sharing their musical skills and talents. The Recital will begin at 5:30pm in the Lecture Theatre.

Cyberbullying

This week our students in Year 4, 5 and 6 attended the Cyber Safety play 'Cyber Busters' performed by Class Act Theatre group. It was an engaging script about relevant contemporary issues; how to prevent cyber bullying, friendship and positive self-esteem. In particular, the theme 'Cyber Busters' explored all facets of electronic bullying, including Internet safety, Emails, Web Sites, Social Networking, Chat Rooms, Mobile phones; and Text messages. Primary students were invited to engage and interact throughout the performance to test their knowledge on cyber safety. Students also documented their learning by participating in a written reflection task after the performance. Special thanks to Mrs Truscott for organising this incursion.

Next term, Mrs Truscott is planning a Cyber Safety Information session for parents. Save the date Wed 27 July 8:45-9:30am or 2:30-3.10pm. This session will facilitate the opportunity to discuss valuable cyber safety resources, managing mobile devices and social media, internet safe search engines and tools and parenting in a digital age. More information will follow.

Comfy Dress Day

LifeLink raises funds to assist the work of social service agencies provided by the Archdiocese of Perth. LifeLink agencies reach out to many West Australians in need each year providing shelter, food, job training, family support and other care.

On Friday, 1 July we are having a 'comfy dress day' in the Primary School to raise funds for Archbishop Costelloe's LifeLink Appeal. On this day students can wear comfy clothes to school, such as, PJ's, slippers, tracksuits, onesies, etc.

A gold coin donation would be greatly appreciated and will be collected by our Year 6 student leaders on the day. We will also be collecting foods to provide warmth and comfort to families in need. Examples includes, tin soup, milo, coffee, etc.

We would also like to collect some new cozy socks for children and adults.

Thank you for supporting this worthy appeal. Together, we can make a difference to help others feel comfy in these Winter months.
