Rowing Regatta Held at Champion Lakes

On Saturday 25th February, the John XXII Rowing Crews competed in a combined regatta held at Champion Lakes. The Australian Rowing Championships will be held at the same facility from 5 - 11 March 2012.

For some crews it was the first time to compete at such a facility. All crews arrived energised and full of anticipation for a successful regatta. A feeling of determination and achievement set the scene for a memorable day.

Again our Senior Girls Quad started the day with incredible spirit to race a 2000m race. Fourth place was a fantastic achievement!

The 10A Quad competed in their Second Senior Open Quad. This week they raced a distance of 2000m (last week was 1000m) and finished 4th place. Considering they are competing against Year 12 Quad's this is an awesome result. Tired and determined they raced their usual Year 10 Quad race to row to second position trailing the first crew by just 2 seconds!

This is the first season that the Year 10 boys have had an opportunity of racing in a VIII. The Year 10 VIII came 6th in their year group behind Wesley but in front of Hale. The boys have proven to be a tough determined crew having been required to compete against senior PSA crews in prior regattas this season. It is this determination that will see them improve on this week's result at the next regatta.

Year 10 VIII
(L-R) Cox: Michael Biddulph, William Williamson, Jack Lee, Luke Hogan, Peter Carman, Hamish Johnston, Cameron Williams, Lucas Smith

Our Senior VIII's competed in two races against eight other schools with incredible endurance. Their first race was a distance of 2000m and with the adrenalin pumping they surged forward to row to fourth position trailing the first crew by just 15 seconds - a brilliant achievement! Inspired with their result, they competed in their second race which was a distance of 1500m to achieve fourth place! All your hard work and determination has certainly paid off.

Boys Snr VIII
(L-R) Cox: Michael Biddulph, Harry Wallington, Brent Vivian, Drew Wallington, Tristan Gorey, Tim Wallace, Daniel Hunt, Connor Wallington, George Harding

Again the Year 9 Quads showed remarkable improvement at this regatta. Their enthusiasm and willingness is commended.

Our Girls' Senior VIII looked very athletic and determined in their 2000m race. Seeing that you are competing out of season your performance is incredible. Well done girls!

As a spectator watching our crews in action, it is more and more noticeable each week how competitive our Rowing Club is becoming. The training schedule of early mornings and afternoon land training sessions is evident with such fine performances of our crews. Considering we are the only co-ed school in the competition, our rowers are achieving incredible results - our competitors have the advantage in that they have a larger pool of rowers to work with.

We would like to thank all of our supporters who made the trip to Champion Lakes to cheer on, support and encourage our rowers. We look forward to seeing you again at the next regatta on 17th March at Champion Lakes.
