Around the Primary

Dear Parents

We have had a very busy time around the Primary this week. This morning the whole school gathered in the St Louis Sports Centre to celebrate Mass. These prayerful times are an important part of building our community and celebrating that we are all part of God's family. It was wonderful to see the Primary Singers alongside the Secondary Choir leading the singing. The staff were very proud that the children were so well-behaved and participated well throughout the liturgy.

As you are aware attendance at school is a critical factor in any child's academic success. Children should attend school every day, except in cases of illness or emergency. It is impossible to replace the learning that happens on any school day with make-up work. In addition, the teachers put a lot of time into the preparation of each lesson and children should be at school for the entire day. We do understand that children may need to attend medical appointments, speech therapy or occupational therapy sessions throughout the day. However, we are concerned that some children are attending extra tutoring during school time. We would appreciate if extra tutoring could occur out of school hours so that children do not miss valuable lessons on a regular basis. If your child is attending extra tutoring during school hours, please inform me directly.

Our Primary photos have been scheduled for Tuesday 21 February. All families will shortly receive photo information from Photo Hendriks. The timetable for group photos will be advertised next week. It is important that all children are in the group photo so please avoid scheduling appointments on this day.

The teachers are now finalizing preparations for the Parent Information Evenings next week. This is an important night whereby you have the opportunity to listen to your child's teacher outline their program and procedures for this school year. All families are encouraged to be represented at the Parent Information evenings next week (see below for specific meeting dates/times).

HELLO FROM THE PRIMARY SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

I look forward to continuing my role as Primary Counsellor this year.  In this role I hope to compliment the work done by both parents and teachers in developing children's social and emotional skills and resilience. My goal is to help children develop communication and problem solving skills that enable them to; establish healthy peer relationships, engage fully in school and reach their full potential. I also recognise that life can present sad and challenging situations and my intervention can help children cope with these difficulties and enable them to enjoy being children again. I know that it is not unusual to feel overwhelmed or worried about your child and you are welcome to contact me anytime for a chat, coming to see me does not have to be a last resort.  I am available at school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and every second Wednesday (odd weeks on the school calendar). Pop in anytime to my new office in the lower primary quadrangle or I can be contacted by phone on

9383 0469 or by email:  murphy.anne@johnxxiii.edu.au .

The beginning of the year can be stressful for some children. The Kidsmatter website offers some useful advice to help children cope with returning to school for anyone interested.
