Sun Protection Guidelines

JOHN XXIII COLLEGE

Sun Protection Guidelines (updated 2009)       

 

PURPOSE

To offer students and staff reasonable protection from the dangers of exposure to the sun.

John XXIII College Primary School has SunSmart status approved by the Cancer Council of WA. Sun Protection Guidelines available to view on College website.

BEHAVIOUR

Primary School

  • Students required to wear College broad-brimmed hats when outdoors. No hat no play policy.

Secondary School

  • Students required to wear College bucket hat, College broad brimmed hat or College caps when required to be outside for a College designated activity or during Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Fitness for Health lessons or when playing sport at the College or offsite in a College Sport team unless it is unsafe or impractical to do so.
  •  At all other times when students are outside the classroom they are encouraged to wear a hat and use sunscreen. It is ultimately the responsibility of each student to adopt appropriate SunSmart practices. (as from 2010 the College proposes to have bucket hats available only )
  •  All students encouraged to wear sunscreen SPF 30+ and hats. Sunscreen is available in all primary classes. Sunscreen is available from canteen, sport dept, student reception, library and health centre. Sunscreen is placed in all first aid kits.

General

  • All students are encouraged to use the daily application of sunscreen before: coming to school, before recess and lunch, before sport and any outdoor activities. 
  • Students and staff encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen outdoors.
  • Students and staff encouraged to use available shade on College campus.
  • Students required to wear College rash vests during swimming activities. 
  •  Staff and parents encouraged to model SunSmart behaviour.

 

CURRICULUM

  •  Incorporate sunsmart/skin cancer prevention programs as part of school curriculum
  • Reinforce sunsmart behaviour through: College newsletters, SunSmart posters, displays and handouts in library and Health Centre.
  • Ensure SunSmart guidelines are reflected in the planning of all outdoor events.

ENVIRONMENT

  •  Provide SunSmart clothing items as part of College uniform (eg. Rash Vests)
  •  Schedule assemblies in shaded areas.
  •  Work on increasing shelter so as to provide adequate shade in the College.

 

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

  •  Review effectiveness of SunSmart guidelines each year.
  •  Review sunsmart behaviour of students and staff.
  •  Assess shade provision and usage.
  •  Provide up-to-date information on skin cancer and its prevention.
